What Is Snap-8?
Snap-8, also known as Acetyl Octapeptide-3 or SNAP-8, is a synthetic octapeptide (8 amino acids) designed to mimic the N-terminal end of SNAP-25, a protein involved in the release of neurotransmitters at the neuromuscular junction. It represents one of the most scientifically sophisticated approaches to cosmetic peptide research, targeting the same biological mechanism as botulinum toxin but through a non-invasive, topical pathway.
Mechanism of Action
Muscle contraction at the neuromuscular junction requires the formation of the SNARE complex. Snap-8 competes with SNAP-25 for a position in this complex, partially inhibiting its formation. The result is a reduction in the intensity of muscle contractions, which over time leads to a softening of expression lines and wrinkles caused by repetitive facial movements.
What Research Shows
In vitro and clinical research on Snap-8 has demonstrated measurable reductions in the depth of expression lines, particularly around the eyes (crow's feet) and forehead. Studies have shown it to be well-tolerated with a favourable safety profile. Research has also explored its synergistic potential when combined with other cosmetic peptides such as Argireline.
